Weezer Brings The Gathering to Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena

More than three decades into their career, Weezer could easily build an arena tour around nostalgia alone. Instead, on Sunday, September 13, the band brought The Gathering to Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena with an elaborate production, deep cuts, acoustic performances and plenty of the songs fans have been singing along to for decades.

The current Weezer lineup features Rivers Cuomo on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards; Brian Bell on guitar, keyboards and backing vocals; Scott Shriner on bass, keyboards and backing vocals; and Patrick Wilson on drums, with occasional guitar and vocals.

Welcome to The Gathering

Before the band appeared, an introductory film established the wonderfully ridiculous premise behind the evening.

A young Weezer fan wants the band to perform at his house to impress the kids bullying him. He calls Weezer’s agent and offers the band 98 cents to play, only to be rejected. After drawing Weezer symbols along with an infinity symbol, a little supernatural intervention eventually brings the message to Cuomo and inspires the band to come together for The Gathering.

When the film ended, the story spilled onto the arena stage.

The production recreated a suburban home and backyard, complete with a house, white picket fence, mailbox, plants, picnic table, string lights and shoes hanging from overhead power lines. A massive video backdrop extended the neighborhood beyond the physical set.

Weezer emerged into their newly constructed backyard and opened with “Shine Again,” followed by “Surf Wax America.”

From there, the band moved freely throughout its catalog. Early highlights included “Keep Fishin’,” “Hash Pipe,” “The Good Life,” “No Other One,” “Slob” and “Beverly Hills.”

The set also gave considerable attention to Pinkerton, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. Rather than relying entirely on familiar singles, Weezer rewarded longtime fans with deeper selections throughout the night.

When the Lights Went Out

Following “Across the Sea,” lightning appeared to strike and the stage suffered a carefully staged “power outage.”

With the main production supposedly offline, the show shifted to a smaller campfire-style performance area for one of the evening’s best changes of pace.

During an acoustic “Longtime Sunshine,” Cuomo moved to keyboards, Wilson picked up a guitar, Bell played clarinet and Shriner remained on bass. The band followed with an acoustic performance of “In the Garage,” an especially appropriate choice considering the backyard setting surrounding them.

Eventually, the band discovered a high-voltage switch incorporated into the scenery, restored power and launched into “Pork and Beans.” Cuomo then moved behind the drum kit while Wilson picked up a guitar, briefly reversing two of the band’s familiar roles.

A Special Guest

Later in the set, Silversun Pickups bassist Nikki Monninger returned to the stage for more than the typical one-song guest appearance.

Monninger joined Weezer for “We Might as Well Be Strangers,” “Go Away” and “I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams,” providing the female vocal counterpart on the songs before making a playful exit with a brief piece of “So Long, Farewell” from The Sound of Music.

Saving the Biggest Songs for Last

After spending much of the night exploring deeper corners of their catalog, Weezer closed with an impressive run of fan favorites.

“Undone – The Sweater Song” kicked off the final stretch, followed by “El Scorcho,” “Say It Ain’t So” and “Buddy Holly.”

Rather than ending with another explosion of distorted guitars, the band chose the warmer “Island in the Sun” to close the 26-song performance.

The Gathering succeeds because Weezer doesn't simply rely on nostalgia. The familiar hits are there, but they're surrounded by deep cuts, acoustic arrangements, instrument swaps and one of the most elaborate stage productions the band has taken on tour.

The suburban house, backyard, campfire and opening film weren't merely decoration. They became part of the performance itself, giving the evening a storyline and personality that separated it from a conventional greatest-hits arena show.

For one night in Seattle, Climate Pledge Arena became Weezer’s backyard—and everyone was invited to The Gathering.
